While Maman went to them to talk about moving things, or whatever, Marinette headed into the place, waving off one of the moving people’s offer to carry her suitcase. Folks in similarly ragged clothes idled around the front door, the moving truck-now open and almost empty-parked in front of them. It was silent again as the taxi made its last turns in Canal Saint-Martin, the neighborhood they’d be moving to, stopping by the side of a narrow, three-store, building tucked right at the street’s intersection. She opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but only got out another hum. Marinette hugged the packed backpack to her chest, resting her chin on top of it. “But I promise I’ll do my best to give you everything you deserve.” “I know it’s difficult now, Marinette,” she said gently after a while. Maman tried to make conversation during the car trip, and Marinette tried to keep on it to the best of her abilities, but there were only so many ‘hmm’s and ‘uh-huh’s that Maman could take before sighing and silently looking out the window. The bakery plaque had already been taken out and there was a giant ‘ FOR SALE’ sign on the glass window. Mostly because it didn’t have any lingering sentiment anyway.
