![]() ![]() ![]() Once again, we have been used as props in a Pentagon public relations exercise.” We say these things with disappointment and sadness for our country. “The deception surrounding this case was an insult to the family: but more importantly, it’s primary purpose was to deceive a whole nation. Kevin Tillman, who joined the Army with his brother and accompanied his body home from Afghanistan, helped draft the document, which a family friend handed out to a group of reporters at the base of the driveway of Mary Tillman’s home, where an American flag hung next to the row of mailboxes. Later, they issued a scathing four-page written statement. Tillman’s family – his parents, Mary and Pat brother, Kevin: and widow, Marie – were briefed in San Jose about the report at the same time top officers in the Pentagon were releasing its findings. The findings released Monday were the result of the broadest investigations yet of Tillman’s death – the most widely reported friendly fire casualty of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Punishment for those officers could include reprimands, demotions, dismissal from the Army or courts martial trials for making false statements under oath. Thomas Gimble, however, acting inspector general of the Defense Department, concluded that individual officers made “critical errors” in handling and reporting Tillman’s death and “had no reasonable explanation” for why they did not inform the family of how Tillman died until three weeks after a nationally televised memorial service in San Jose. Rodney Johnson, head of Army criminal investigations, found no criminal conduct or cover-up in the shooting. ![]() ![]() The Pentagon announced Monday that one of the Army’s top generals will swiftly determine what punishments await up to nine officers – including four fellow generals – who gave inaccurate or misleading information about the death of Tillman, a San Jose native and former NFL star.įindings of two simultaneous investigations concluded that Tillman was killed accidentally by other Rangers while on patrol. Pat Tillman’s family on Monday blasted the latest Army investigation into his 2004 friendly fire death in Afghanistan as “shamefully unacceptable,” and vowed to press ahead with their own crusade to reveal the truth about the people who put him in harm’s way – and concealed the real nature of his death for more than a month. ![]()
